5 Teams That Could Sneak Into College Football Playoff Entering Week 5 Of 2017 Season

The 2017 college football season is still young (it’s only Week 5, after all), which means so much can still happen … like the Alabama Crimson Tide losing two games.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, because Alabama is predicted by many to not only make the College Football Playoff but win the title as well, let’s take a look at five teams that could sneak, if you will, into the playoff.

Hey, with so much football left to be played, and with this sport being known for its major upsets, anything could happen, right?

Record: 4-0

Ranking: No. 7 AP Top 25; No. 8 Coaches Poll

The Georgia Bulldogs are dark horses, if you will, for two reasons: (1) They entered 2017 with a No. 15 ranking, which doesn’t exactly scream playoff favorite. (2) If Georgia plans on making the playoff, it probably has to win the SEC championship game, a game that, more than likely, will be played against Alabama … who has made three out of three playoff trips.

Washington State Cougars

Record: 5-0

Ranking: No. 16 AP Top 25; No. 16 Coaches Poll

The Washington State Cougars just got done downing the USC Trojans, so if fans didn’t think they were the real deal before, then that win should give them enough reason to believe in the Cougars. Plus, it doesn’t hurt when a team has a quarterback like Luke Falk on its side (the man could end up winning the Heisman when it’s all said and done).

TCU Horned Frogs

Record: 4-0

Ranking: No. 9 AP Top 25; No. 11 Coaches Poll

While the TCU Horned Frogs might not be the biggest dark horse of all time entering Week 5 since they are ranked as high as No. 9 in the polls, it’s important to note TCU entered 2017 unranked. Don’t look now, but the Horned Frogs are 4-0, and they also have a big-time victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys (that contest was played on the road for TCU, and Oklahoma State was ranked No. 6 at the time).

Miami Hurricanes

Record: 3-0

Ranking: No. 14 AP Top 25; No. 13 Coaches Poll

Are the Miami Hurricanes finally back to being championship contenders? In time, we will find out, but this squad still has clashes with the Florida State Seminoles, Virginia Tech Hokies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, just to name a few. Plus, and this is a big one, if the Hurricanes did go through their regular season schedule untouched, and won the ACC Coastal, they would probably have to play the defending national champs in the ACC title game.

San Diego State Aztecs

Record: 4-0

Ranking: No. 19 AP Top 25; No. 21 Coaches Poll

For all it’s worth, a non-Power Five school has never made the College Football Playoff, making the San Diego State Aztecs‘ playoff path … well, very unclear. However, San Diego State already got the nation’s attention with a victory over the Stanford Cardinal, who were ranked No. 19 at the time. The biggest issue is quality wins — if San Diego State can run the tables, that is. It doesn’t hurt that running back Rashaad Penny is a Heisman contender, though.
