New York Jets running back Bilal Powell suffered a devastating loss of his friend, a positive figure in Powell’s life. He was 36 when he succumbed to the disease.
Shortly thereafter, Powell made a commitment to champion the fight against it. He teamed up with the Colon Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising overall awareness for colorectal cancer and supporting preventative and research programs.
Powell’s involvement made it to the field this week. In Week 13, he paid tribute to those impacted by colorectal cancer through the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” platform. Helping design the customized cleats is renowned artist SolesBySir, who will incorporate nods to Powell’s friend, current patients and the Foundation. Powell will be donating his game worn jersey and cleats after the game.
Powell – along with representatives from the foundation – visited colorectal cancer survivors, patients and clinicians to learn more about what others can do to help prevent and combat the disease. He also launched a Crowdrise campaign that will directly benefit the Foundation’s efforts.
