The first rankings for the College Football Playoff were released today (Oct. 31), and there was a bit of a surprise at the top — well, if you are comparing the playoff rankings to the other major polls, that is.
Coming in at No. 1: The Georgia Bulldogs, which is where the surprise part comes into play.

The Alabama Crimson Tide, who are ranked No. 2 in the CFP rankings, have been ranked No. 1 in both major polls (AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll) since the start of the 2017 college football season.
As fans can see from the above tweet, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came in at No. 3 and the Clemson Tigers at No. 4, which means if the season ended today (of course, it doesn’t), Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson would make the playoff.
Reminder: So much can happen now until bowl season rears its beautiful head, and if the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide continue to stick to their perfect ways in the record department, then they would end up playing each other in the SEC championship game, which seems more and more likely as the weeks go by.
Now more than ever, the SEC championship game is looking like the game of the season — you know, if Georgia and Alabama are undefeated entering that big-stage showdown.
There’s still plenty of football left to be played, and basically anything can happen now until the regular season comes to an end (we’re talking about college football, after all).
